Newborn sessions for kids who are not firstborns are rarely about the baby. Ok, obviously I capture the baby. But the main focus of the session is always the older child(ren). I know this seems backwards, so let me explain…
The firstborn is the one who is having their world rocked and I love trying to capture the baby’s arrival through their eyes. Sometimes they are instantly enamored and others they could care less. There is no right or wrong as all kids adjust differently.
In these sessions I spend the bulk of my time and effort with the siblings. I talk to them, give them attention, see their room, ask them to be my helper and let them direct me. Their response to me and to the baby guides the direction that the session goes. I let the story unfold.
