Sabrina: Welcome to the Shoot at Straight podcast, where honesty meets heart and real talk actually means something. I’m your host, Sabrina Gebhart, and each week we get vulnerable, practical, and just a little bit bold so you can feel seen, supported, and ready to take the next step in your photography journey.
Let’s go.
Welcome back to the Shoot It Straight podcast, my friends. Today we have another episode of Real Women Real Stories. You have been hearing these for a few months now. These, this is a series that’s kind of spread out where I’m sitting down with women who’ve been through my Root to Rise mastermind, and these conversations are so interesting because you get to hear unique perspectives from women all over the country in different phases of business and life.
My hope is that when you hear their stories, where they were, what shifted for them, what’s working, how they’ve evolved, that you’ll feel less alone. Because being a photographer and balancing motherhood is like a hot mess sometimes. And oftentimes we can feel like we’re doing everything wrong, we’re failing.
Our problems are unique to us, and that’s really never the case. And so I’ve brought these women in to have these conversations on the podcast so that. Hopefully you can feel seen. And today we have my friend Kelly Bullock. Uh, and I’m so excited to have her share her story today and her journey because it’s a good one.
So let’s just start, my friend, will you introduce yourself to the listeners? Hi.
Kelly: Yes. Thank you so much for having me, Sabrina. Um, gosh, you’ve been in my ear through the podcast for such a long time, and so it’s really fun to like see you face to face and to be here. My name is Kelly Bullock. I live in Raleigh, North Carolina.
I am a motherhood photographer. I photograph a lot of young growing families, newborn and maternity sessions, and honestly, I thrive a lot of in home sessions, so that’s where I’m usually hanging out at. Sometimes I’ll be outdoor. But yeah, I really love in-home and when I’m not behind the camera, I am actually also a nurse anesthetist.
So I’m in the operating room a couple days a week, and I’m also a mom to three littles. I have twin boys who are four, and my daughter is three. So life is full at home.
Sabrina: It sure is. You have such a busy life and a full life in the best way possible. So here’s the thing. We met through our mutual friend Natasha, and she Hey, Natasha.
Hey Natasha. We love you. Thank you. Um, and so you had kind of, like you said, you’d been listening to the podcast. You followed me on Instagram. I think you, we had dimmed a little bit, like you weren’t a stranger to me. Um, when you joined Root to Rise and. You joined when enrollment was open in spring of 2024, and that program started that summer.
So we kicked off in July. And I remember you enrolled, and I think you sent me a DM or an email and just expressing how excited you were and you had wanted to do this program for a while, and the timing was finally right, and so you jumped in and I was thrilled to have you. But then what was interesting is Root Rise started and we had our very first kickoff call, and then we had our very first Voxer day, which is where everybody kind of plays catch up.
They’re like, let me tell you where I’m at and what I’m struggling with and, and it’s a lot. But I remember you jumped into Voxer that first day and I was like. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, timeout. This is not the same. Energetically things don’t feel the same as when you first dmd me that you joined the program.
So something had shifted fairly dramatically in a couple of months time between enrollment and when you started. So think back to that summer. It’s summer 2024. Where were you? What was going on?
Kelly: Oh gosh, that is such a good question. And you’re right, the energy did shift so quickly in just a couple months.
So, uh, just to give all your listeners, um, some background. I used to live in Raleigh. We moved away to Virginia. We moved back to Raleigh. Um, and so, uh, I signed up for Roots Rides about six months after being back in Raleigh. I was still like in like the hustle and the trying to grow my business here because when I came back I was more of like a luxury photographer.
It’s a very different experience and so I was like in the thick of it and I am like a total Enneagram. 2, 3, 3. I’m a total Enneagram three I. And so all achievers, so when I set my mind to something, I am like all in. And so that spring, um, of 2024, I was just like focusing so much on growing and I was like feeling the energy and everything and then may hits.
So in May, had my first motherhood events and it was my daughter’s birthday and we went out of town and there was just so much going on that I just was at complete max capacity. So much so that I was going so hard for so long that I was just done. I was just completely done. I completely stopped marketing.
I came off of Instagram. I just needed like a really big, like, it wasn’t even really a reset at that point. I was just trying to reevaluate my life. And all my choices and really see like what I valued. And so when I signed up with you and when we talked, I was all in. And by the time I started again, I was just coming off of this two month hiatus.
So yeah, I was just really questioning if like this was worth it and ’cause I’m that kind of person that like kind of goes all in, you know.
Sabrina: It’s crazy because I literally remember the walk I was on listening to your Voxer and Vox ring back and like I remember where I was because it really hit me so hard that your energy shifted so dramatically in such a short period of time.
And I was like, whoa, whoa. We got a lot of stuff to unpack here. What happened? You know, um, because you really were questioning everything. You really were like starting this program and you were like, I’m excited to be here, but also like, I don’t know if I’m gonna be in business in six months. Like, I don’t know if I wanna do this anymore.
And so it was this really dramatic shift that we have been working through. So when you joined the Mastermind, again, we had a mutual friend. You knew a little bit on the outside of like what it entailed and what it was gonna be like. Did anything in particular surprise you the most about joining the Mastermind and the experience?
Kelly: Oh yes. So I did, I knew about the mastermind about Roots Rise, and I listened, like I mentioned to your podcast for so long. So I knew that there was an aspect of personal growth. That’s something that you feel so much about, and that’s also why I chose you to be my coach, um, and why I wanted to invest in learning from you.
But I had no idea the transformation I would have personally. I just really thought a lot of it would be very business focused. When we finished like the first round of route to rise and I just truly was like a different person. And so just like even building in white space and just being able to like say no, like giving myself permission to say no, giving myself permission to going back to white space, but like, just like to go work out and like get a massage, do something for myself.
I didn’t need to be like all on all the time. Or photography and being so succumbed to hustle culture. I didn’t have to be like that.
Sabrina: Yeah. It’s so funny because that is something that I hear so often when I ask this question, like, what’s the, the most surprising is that they’re like, we, we came to the program for the business side, but we’re shocked by the personal development side.
Even though I talk about it and I’m like, I don’t, it’s, it’s on the landing page guys. It talks about personal development. I don’t know why everybody’s so surprised. I think there’s this part of it that maybe they’re like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, personal development sounds good. But they don’t realize, like you said, they don’t realize that they can have a transformation that big.
Like maybe everybody joins thinking like, oh, I’m okay. Like if I have a little bit of growth, it’s fine. Is that like, do you, is that what you kind of think?
Kelly: Oh yeah, that was totally neat. Maybe that was me being like fully naive. A little bit prideful too, but I was like, yeah, like I’m doing pretty good. And I was like, in my life at that time, what was so overwhelming to me was my business.
Like I know they’re interconnected, like I get it. Like, but it just, I didn’t realize how interconnected it was and I didn’t realize how life-giving like balance my business and balance or, and boundaries in my business, like really changes my professional, my personal life so much too. I had no idea how much growth I needed
Sabrina: and it’s been so cool to watch because you’ve done the program twice.
You did it back to back. So you did it for a year basically to see, like in the beginning, obviously you were starting from such a burned out, negative place, so we had to really like unpack a lot of stuff. And on paper it probably felt like we were doing maybe the boring stuff or the stuff that didn’t give you as much momentum, but it was the stuff that had to come first.
But now that we’re a year later. It’s so cool to see how much business growth you have had because you’ve had the capacity to have it. You know, like doing that personal development work created this like foundation for everything else to take off in a really healthy way.
Kelly: Oh yeah. It’s amazing. I can’t believe.
Now, like looking back a year ago and seeing where I am now, like in my business, it’s unbelievable. Literally just puts me at all. I’m so happy about it.
Sabrina: Yeah. Yeah. It’s, it’s been so, so cool. I’m curious, Kelly, is there a conversation or a piece of feedback or like a moment that really stuck with you more than others?
Kelly: That’s really, there’s a couple things and really it comes back to the fact that like, I can’t do it all and I just love doing it all.
Sabrina: Yeah, say same
Kelly: because, um, going back to the pride, I just feel like I am so capable about being a present mom. I am more than capable about being a nurse anesthetist and being a family photographer, and I can do all the things within my business, like I am like so capable.
What you helped me realize is that like I, I really can’t do it all, and I was spreading myself like way too thin, and so you really helped me like lean into outsourcing. Like before I met you, I was outsourcing absolutely nothing. And now, gosh, I outsource bookkeeping, my design, my SEO, my emails, my blogs.
I got help setting up my finances with Kelly Marshall, and now I’m working on my systems and automation with Colin. I have a housekeeper and I even outsource laundry. Like I don’t need to fold clothes perfectly. It’s okay. I don’t need to be the one to do that. I can, and we’ll gladly pay to do that. And I think part of that goes back to when you shared about the analogy with the burners.
Just like to help also give background to all of your listeners, and I forget where it was, what book it’s from, but essentially if you like envision like you have four burners in front of you and there’s only so much energy and so much capacity that goes to all of the burners. And so for me, what I value is I value personal health.
I value photography. I love being a nurse anesthetist, and I really value being a mom. Before I started Root to Rise last year, I just had all four burners at max capacity, like full throttle. And I was just doing it all. And um, that’s just not the reality of how it works. I only have so much energy to go around.
And so, um, that analogy sticks with me daily because I’m just trying to lean into the ease and the season of life that I’m at. And so that was just very transformational for me.
Sabrina: Yeah. Oh, I love that. That’s always such a good lesson in the group because it opens a lot of really interesting conversations between the women in there and their beliefs about it and what it looks like and how to move forward through things.
But it’s one of those things where I tell people, it just, it opens your eyes to the fact that, like you said, your energy is limited and sometimes we need to turn off one of the burners, and that’s okay. We don’t have to be full capacity at everything, so. Yeah, it’s a really interesting chat. So maybe you just an answered this question, but if, if you feel like there’s anything else to add, I’ll go ahead and ask it.
Did you, was there anything in particular that was really tough, a really big challenge or something that you faced during the Mastermind that you were able to work through that’s had a really big transformation or big impact for you?
Kelly: I mean, it’s all kind of like interlays together from what we’ve talked about already, but really trying to find a balance that works for me and that is fulfilling to me and like working toward that.
Through that, it’s just like giving myself permission to say no to things or like to turn down a little, burn the burner a little bit and to, you know, put more energy into, you know, being with my kids and maybe I put down work. And so setting those boundaries because I wasn’t thriving. You know, a year ago, and so this is really where like personally, I learned how to grow and because of that, and I’m giving myself more space and permission and also holding boundaries, I have so much more energy to put toward my business.
And so no longer do I wanna burn my business to ground. To the ground. In fact, like I have so many goals and aspirations now, and it’s just exciting to experience that. And it took some time and a lot of conversations with you to work through it, but um, now it feels like the sky’s a limit. It is just such a different mindset.
Sabrina: Yeah. Oh my gosh. I, I love that so much. Is there something in particular that jumped out at you that you learned about yourself in this process? Something, and maybe it’s what you’ve already said, you know that you’re a doer, that you’re an achiever, that you like to go hard. Is there something else beyond that that you felt was really eyeopening that you learned about yourself?
Kelly: Those things definitely are very true. I would say, and this is gonna sound very contradictory, but. You help me learn that like I can do it all. Like what I find that fulfills me and that I’m passionate about, like I can do that. But the key is, and what I didn’t know before, is that it takes the right tools and the right resources.
And so I love that. I get to now balance being like a present mom and being a motherhood photographer and serving my clients really, really well and giving them a great client experience. I also get to be a nurse anesthetist, which fulfills me in a whole nother way that being a mom and being a photographer doesn’t.
And so it’s just really fun being able to confidently know that I can choose to do these three things well.
Sabrina: I get asked fairly frequently. How I have my hands in so many things because I do, you know, I’ve got this podcast, I’ve got roots rise, I’ve got one-to-one clients, I’ve got a course, I’ve got a membership, I’ve got photo clients, I have my three kids.
I, you know, there I have my hands in a lot of things. How am I doing it all? And kind of like you said, it’s this dance between outsourcing the stuff I don’t need to be doing, having support, but then also really setting up firm boundaries and priorities and giving myself grace when things need to be set down.
It’s not a perfect formula, but I have realized that I can do all the things that I enjoy doing for different reasons. When I put those things in place, which is. So fun. Right? And and it makes life exciting. Yeah, yeah.
Kelly: Yeah. I love it. I, it’s so funny ’cause I get that asked or people ask me that all the time too.
It’s so funny. But like, um, I can’t actually, imagining not doing any of the things, you know, I can’t imagine like having personal training and being with my book club and like going to have drinks with them, like all these things and it’s just, it just makes for such a fulfilling life. But you really helped me able to do it well and to do it right.
And, um, and I’m just so, so happy. Like, ugh, my life is so different than it was last year. I still can’t get over that. Yeah,
Sabrina: yeah. But like we said, it started by kind of doing some digging first. Like it didn’t, we didn’t just go from Kelly’s miserable, wants to burn it all down to all of a sudden she’s, she’s living the dream, right?
Like it happened. It happened in waves. We slowly uncovered things and solved small problems and then bigger problems. And then slowly over time, over the course of a year, you’ve had this massive transformation, which is so cool, but sometimes it feels like it’s going slow. Right?
Kelly: It did. And it did. Yeah.
And you, but you’re right. Like it’s a foundation and you really helped me like lay the groundwork. And untangle like a lot of the mindset things I was going through, you have this amazing ability to just like, listen to me ramble for 10 minutes and then like pick out those small things and then lean into that.
And those are the things that have just like built up on each other over the past year.
Sabrina: It’s something that I try and remind women when they join early in the program is that it’s, it’s going to feel slow in the beginning. You know, people, women, they take the leap and they make this big investment into a program that is not cheap, and it’s also a long time commitment, and I realize that, and it’s a scary investment in both time and money for a lot of women.
And so they take the leap and they’re so excited to start. And if they have that like Christmas morning energy of like, let’s do this thing, right? And then I’m kind of like, well, but we’re gonna start, you know, it’s gonna be step one step at a time. We’re gonna go really slowly. And it ki it’s a little bit jarring for some people because they’re like, but I wanna move faster.
I wanna see results faster. I wanna like really get this going. And I just have to continually reiterate that like, we’re doing one thing at a time and I promise that this is how it works. But it’s pretty cool because right around the time the program ends is when everybody starts having these insane results.
I, I actually just got a DM yesterday from one of the girls that was in our run together this year. And the program’s been over for what, a month now. And she sent me a DM yesterday and she said, I just wanna let you know that I was looking at my numbers and I was revisiting my goals from the beginning of the year.
And she’s like, and I’m on track to hit my best top goals in every single category. And I was like. See. See, that’s so exciting. I know, and it was. I was like, I hope you feel so proud of yourself because this is proof that the momentum just keeps going, even though the middle is kind of messy and uncomfortable, and it feels like you’ve been doing the work and showing up to the calls and nothing’s happening yet, you just have to keep going and trust the process because.
The success on the other side of all the momentum. It’s inevitable. It’s not a question of if, it’s a matter of when, you know.
Kelly: It’s so true. Yeah. Yes, so true. And it, you just help us like build su like sustainability in that too. You can’t force that.
Sabrina: You know, you’re a perfect example. And I had this story too, where I wanted to go hard and fast in the beginning of my business.
I wanted to hurry up and be the best in my area, the most sought after in my area, the most booked out. I wanted to be like the winner, right? I wanted like the gold star and I, I went about it totally wrong. And spoiler alert, I got to the same point you were at where I was like, this sucks. I’m miserable.
Do I even wanna do this anymore? What kind of nightmare have I put myself in? And I had to do the same thing. I had to undo a whole bunch of stuff and then slowly and intentionally put things in place. That is so much better of a way to grow because exactly what you said, it’s sustainable. You’re able to make intentional changes.
People like us, the Enneagram threes who wanna win and wanna be the best right away, it really is uncomfortable to go slow. But when you’re on the, when you’re on the other side of it. You’re like, okay, nope. This was absolutely the right thing to do. You know
Kelly: this was Yep, yep. And I’m so thankful that like you had that experience and you just like, you have been able to lead me and guide me so much from that.
And that’s why like, I trust you so much. Like you suggest one thing, I’m like, okay, I know you get it. I may not feel it yet, but I’m just gonna like put in the work and I’m gonna do it. And it’s just been, it’s been worth it every single time. It’s just worth it.
Sabrina: Is there something in particular that you feel like you’ve, like achieved, and I’m gonna put air quotes around, achieved, um, achieved in your business or your life that felt maybe impossible or like really too big of a stretch before you joined the program?
Kelly: Yes, there is. And actually in just the past, I. It was a week ago. We made it official. I hired an assistant. I have a client experience coordinator. Being able to grow my business in this way just felt so like out of the realm of possibilities for years. Gosh, I’m just like so excited, like, ’cause this was always like a vision to like get help in this way from when I started the business, but then I kind of just let it go so it wasn’t even on my mind or even a possibility.
And then I was just doing one of my little ramble boxers to you and you’re like, okay, I’m gonna tell you what I see. And you’re like, you need a client experience coordinator to help take some of this off of your plate. And I’m was so resistant to it because. This business is my baby. Like I love being the face of it.
I love doing all the things. Again, I’m more than capable because I’ve outsourced a lot of things, but to hand over some of my, um, client experience journey over to someone just felt so daunting, but. Gosh. We actually just this morning had our first orientation for her, and I am just so excited. I’m so excited.
It’s gonna be great. So that was definitely something that felt impossible, but not only was it made possible, it’s like actually happening.
Sabrina: Yeah. Which is so exciting, and I literally cannot wait to see. How this impacts your time and also your client’s experience because you already have a phenomenal client experience.
Your, your business is such a luxury business. Your clients love you and from start to finish. And one of the things that you were resistant about was like taking yourself out of part of the process because you were like, but they love me and I’m part of what they get and, and all that. Which I was like, I hear you, but also.
Adding someone else in is actually a luxury. Having a staff member help support them in those touch points. Is actually a luxury. You know, when we talked about like luxury vans and luxury shopping and in cases when that is, when that happens and you were like, oh, like you hadn’t even thought about it that way, you know?
Kelly: No, I did not. And um, when I started shifting my mindset through our boxers, you were helping me with that. I got really excited. I’m like, oh, okay. So I get to really elevate my experience for my clients in a whole nother way that is so unique and I am so excited about that, and she’s just incredible. It’s gonna be so great.
I can’t wait to see like where our relationship goes and how my clients feel valued in this way too is gonna be something really special.
Sabrina: Yeah. Yeah. It’s gonna be fun. I’m super excited about that. Kelly, are there particular, um, like habits or boundaries that you started playing with or implemented through the Mastermind that have like really stuck with you?
Kelly: Oh yeah. Well, there’s a lot. There’s a lot of new habits, a lot of new boundaries. But what has been the most impactful has been doing Time Blog Zero. So that’s actually one of your first recommendations for me when I started a year ago, and that has been amazing. So I just sit down every Sunday night and now like I’m bringing my husband into it too, so we can really plan for the next week.
But I just go through and I plan and I prioritize. And so I’m not just like going through my week just very reactive. I didn’t like that feeling of being reactive. I like being very proactive and know like what my days are gonna come or what’s my days are gonna bring and what my priorities are. ’cause those shift every week.
And I only have a very limited amount of time to work on my business and in my business. So I really need to be intentional with my time and that’s been so helpful.
Sabrina: That’s a good one. That’s something that I encourage almost everybody to do. Uh, not everybody needs that. Some people have their own system, which is great, but man, I love time Block zero.
It like really sets your week up for success. Um, it makes Monday morning feel so much easier and less pressure. Yeah. So I love that that one stuck with you. My friend, if somebody was on the fence about joining Root to Rise, what are you gonna tell her?
Kelly: Do it. Just do it. They wouldn’t even think about it.
I’m just kidding. I, um, it is just like. Worth its weight in gold to go through root to rise. Um, not only have I financially made back that money, two, three, like multiple times more, I like, I haven’t even sat down and do the math, but it’s like multiple, multiple times more, maybe 10 times more. Literally after we talked about my numbers.
But there’s such a priceless aspect that like truly you can’t put a number on. And I have just grown so much personally. I become like a more present mother. I have become just a better wife. I mean, every night I was like working on my business next to my husband. Like I didn’t even spend time with him.
Like being in the room is not spending time with him. ’cause I was just working my way on the computer. I now have goals and I have a vision and I have personal time. I was not giving myself to have white space. I wasn’t giving myself time to, um, do things I love, like working out. Now I have personal trainer now.
I read like multiple books a month and I have friendships in a community and all these things I would, did not have my life a year ago. And so through Route to Rise and through your mentoring and through all the Zoom calls. And also community with the other girls. I have just grown leaps and bounds more than I ever thought or could have imagined was even possible.
So thank you so much.
Sabrina: Oh, that’s so sweet. And I, I do wanna pause and make sure the listeners heard something that you just said really quickly. You are doing so much more for yourself now than before. So you know, you’ve got a trainer, you’re, you’ve got book club, you’ve, you’re seeing friends, you’re taking your nights to spend with your husband as opposed to just sitting next to him on the couch.
You have all of these things that have been added in for personal care, social relationships, white space, and. Your business is doing substantially better than it was, so you really have allowed yourself to have more time to take care of yourself and love yourself, and love your people, and also seeing the financial benefits of a business that’s doing very, very well.
It’s possible to have both.
Kelly: It is, it is possible, and it didn’t feel possible a year ago. So thank you so much for helping me see that. Helping me see potential and feel a vision and like actually start pursuing it. It’s just, gosh, I just. So, so valued my time with you, and thank you so much for how much you’ve helped me.
I just will never have enough words.
Sabrina: It’s been fun. You, um, are definitely a star student. You take what I say and you do it and you, you know, and that’s one of the things I tell women in the beginning is like. I’m gonna give you recommendations and advice, but I can’t make you do the work. I can’t make you show up for yourself.
Um, you’re gonna have to do the hard stuff and, um, you’ve always done that, and it’s really cool to see how much it’s all paid off. I, I wanna end with this question. Um, I love to ask the ladies, what is your favorite retreat memory, because you did, you were in Seattle, and then also where did we just go? Ah, Savannah.
Oh my gosh. Listeners we’re recording this in the summer. Okay. My brain is barely hanging on with my people at home. Okay. We were in Savannah. So you, you did Seattle on one coast and then Savannah over on the other. Uh, what’s your favorite retreat memory between the two?
Kelly: Oh my gosh. You mean besides highly encouraging me to eat a fish that was staring at me?
Sabrina: Oh, that’s hilarious. I forgot about that.
Kelly: Oh my gosh. The brands, you know, right? That’s how you say it? I think so. Yeah. Yeah. I don’t even know. Okay. It was amazing. Like all of your other recommendations, it didn’t disappoint. Um, okay. This is really hard because there’s just so many great memories, and honestly, really what it comes down to is it’s just like a feeling that I have and it’s just, there’s nothing like being in the same room as like other women and other moms that are like.
Entrepreneurs and trying to grow their business. It’s like the whole iron sharpens iron thing and the fact that like I can sit down next to any of these women who are like, now my friends and I could just have a conversation with them about anything. And they get it. Like they totally get it and we just help each other grow.
And there’s just so much, so much good conversation. Like not also, I mean, not only are we learning from each other, but we’re growing together and it’s just a beautiful thing. That’s really what it is. It is just amazing time and experience ’cause it’s just, it’s so unique.
Sabrina: Yeah, there’s nothing like the feeling of leaving a retreat when you’re just so full.
You’re so full of joy. And I mean, don’t get me wrong, we leave exhausted because we leave it all on the table at the retreat, but like exhausted in the best way, like exhausted from laughing in conversations and learning and trying new things and staying up late and getting up early. It’s just, it’s the best girls weekend.
And so you did two retreats back to back with two different groups of women. There was not a whole lot of overlap, and so meeting two entire new groups of women, but both of them were just as beautiful and fulfilling as the other, right?
Kelly: Oh, completely. Yes. It was so special. I met so many amazing friends through that.
Sabrina: Yeah, the retreats the best. The retreat’s super fun. Um, okay, I want you to, let’s leave with you telling, uh, the listeners where they can come find you if they wanna come send you a message.
