So, you are expecting a baby and researching your options for a newborn photo session. First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! Whether this is your first baby or your tenth, bringing a baby into this world is super exciting.
If you haven’t considered an in-home newborn session, I really encourage you that you give it some thought. There are SO many reasons why this option is the best but in hopes of keeping this relatively short, I have narrowed it down to what I think are the top 5 reasons.
1. Skip the drama trying to get out the door and just stay home.
Okay, have you ever tried to get out of the door with a newborn in tow? It is a pretty big deal- have they been fed? Changed? Dressed? Do you have spare clothes and diapers? Did you make sure that YOU are dressed too? See what I mean? It is kind of intense. Now, throw in being completely made up for photos. And not just you but your spouse and other children. You want to look fabulous, be prepared AND be somewhere on time. This takes getting out the door to the level of an olympic event. Skip all the mess and just do your session at home:)
2. Show off the nursery that you worked so hard on.
I know that the very second you found out you were expecting, you started to look around on Pinterest for nursery ideas. Okay, maybe not the SECOND you found out, but I am sure those dreams filled your head pretty quickly:) I have three kiddos myself and planning nurseries was one of my favorite parts of being pregnant. I had so much fun picking out the smallest details for my babies. One of the best reasons to have a session at home is to get to capture this picture perfect space. There is no more natural place for a newborn to be photographed than in their very own room. And imagine how special it will be to have professional photos of your precious baby in the space that you created just for them.
3. Toddlers are happiest among their own stuff.
If this baby isn’t your first child, then you have an even bigger challenge ahead of you. I am going to let you in on a little secret: Toddlers run the show. Okay, if you are a toddler Mom then you probably already knew that:) Seriously though, keeping older brother or sister happy during your newborn session is completely crucial and one of the easiest ways to do that is by surrounding them with their favorite things. Sure, you could drag all their stuff with them to a newborn session. OR you could just stay home and save yourself the stress of potentially forgetting their favorite toy of the day which would ensure a meltdown of epic proportions.
4. Champagne, coffee or both!
You know what I love about being in someone’s home? Being in their home! I can’t tell you how many times I have showed up to a newborn session and upon arrival immediately been asked if I would like a up of coffee or a mimosa. Yep, I get offered champagne and it is awesome! Do photos make you, or your spouse, a little nervous? A mimosa on picture day is a great way to calm nerves AND celebrate the occasion. Didn’t get much sleep the night before (because, newborns)? Keep the coffee flowing the entire session. Or maybe you are on Team Both- great, let’s keep the beverages flowing and have a great time in the comfort of your own home.
5. You entire wardrobe is readily available in case backup clothes are needed.
Newborns are beautiful and adorable and so very magical. But they are also super messy and have aaalllll the bodily functions. And so do toddlers. Save yourself the drama of spit up, poop, pee, drool and anything else that could possibly happen and just stay home with your clothes. Mess happens on picture clothes? No problem, run to the closet and grab a change of clothes and the session will go on without a hitch!
