How to Get Photography Clients—the question every photographer asks at some point in their business journey. When I first started in photography, I know that I felt unsure about how to attract clients who valued my work. If you’re feeling the same way, you’re in the right place!
Before I jump in though, hi! I’m Sabrina! I’ve been photographing families for over 14 years, and now that I’ve built the photography business of my dreams, I help other photographers do the same!
When I’m not capturing magical moments for newborns and families in Fort Worth and Dallas, I’m cheering on photographers like you—helping you grow a business that puts your heart and life first. Whether you’re here to book a session or learn how to attract your dream clients, I’m so glad you’re here!

Define Your Dream Client
First things first—who do you love to photograph? Families? Small business owners? Couples in love? I know that especially in the beginning, it can feel like anyone with money to pay you is a dream client. But bare with me. Knowing your dream client is the foundation of building a successful photography business. When you’re clear about who you want to work with, it’s so much easier to create work that speaks directly to them.
Take a moment to think about their lifestyle. What do they value most? What moments do they want to hold onto forever? Maybe it’s the quiet joy of a newborn snuggled at home or the laughter of a family enjoying a day outdoors? Maybe it’s a relaxed two hour session where you capture them in their natural environment? Maybe it’s a quick mini session so that your client can get the family photos she wants, without trying to get everyone else on board for a longer session?
Write it down! When you’ve got a clear picture in mind, your marketing becomes much more personal (and in my experience? Way more fun).
Show Off What Makes You YOU!
Now that we’ve talked about who you want to attract, let’s talk about how People don’t just book a photographer—they book a person. What makes working with you special? Maybe it’s your relaxed vibe, your love for natural light, or how you make kids giggle during sessions.
On top of your photography skills, don’t be afraid to let your personality shine! Share it on social media, in your website copy, and during client interactions. When you show what makes you unique, you’re already on your way to learning how to get photography clients who align with your style and vision.
Build a Portfolio That Wows
Next, it’s time to show off your work. After all, your portfolio is your chance to show exactly the kind of work you want to be hired for.
If you’re just starting out or trying to pivot into a new style, don’t stress! It’s completely okay to shoot a few sessions for free or in exchange for something valuable, like a testimonial or social media shoutout.
My advice though? Be intentional with the work you showcase. Only share images that align with the kind of photography you’re passionate about and want to keep doing. Your portfolio should speak directly to your dream clients.

Make Your Online Presence Shine
You have the foundations down, so now it’s time to show it off! Your website and social media are often the first impressions clients will have of you—so let’s make them count!
I usually recommend you keep your website clean and simple. Make it easy for clients to navigate, and include a heartfelt “About Me” section (hello, dream clients want to know you!). Including pricing will also help you get more photography clients (especially in the beginning). Then, use your social media to share recent sessions, behind-the-scenes moments, and even snippets of your everyday life. Come find me and say hi!
People love connecting with the human behind the camera, so don’t hold back!
Spread the Word (Your Clients Are Your Best Advocates!)
Next on the list of how to get photography clients? Word-of-mouth. Trust me, it is one of the most powerful ways to get photography clients. Happy clients love to share their experiences, so make it easy for them!
Encourage them to leave a review, tag you in their photos, or refer a friend. Want to go the extra mile? Offer a referral bonus—something small but meaningful is usually enough to thank them for sending new clients your way.
By making it easy and rewarding for clients to talk about you, you’re not only building trust but also creating a network of loyal advocates who will help you get photography clients for years to come!
Connect with Your Community
And speaking of building relationships, don’t forget about your community. Networking doesn’t have to feel awkward! It’s actually one of the most effective ways to learn how to get photography clients and grow your business, especially in the early days. Reach out to local businesses and see how you can collaborate.
Building relationships (both in person and online) can open doors you didn’t even know were there. Plus, it’s a great way to get inspired and learn how to get photography clients through community connections!
Share What You Know
Even in the beginning, you know more than your ideal client. One of the best ways to build trust with potential clients is to share helpful, educational content. Write a blog post about what to wear for family photos, or create an Instagram Reel about preparing for a session.
Clients will appreciate your tips, and it helps them feel confident booking with you.
Not sure where to start? Think about questions clients ask you most often and go from there!
Patience Pays Off
Growing a business takes time, and that’s okay! I’ve been doing this for a loooong time now. Every step you take—big or small—is bringing you closer to your goals. Stay focused, be persistent, and trust the process.
