The Early Bird Gets the Worm: Summer Sessions are better than Fall Sessions

Family photography’s busy season is and has always been fall. If you’re reading this, I’d bet money on the fact that you’ve booked a photo session for your family in the fall at least once, too. And I get it: great weather, pretty backdrops and close to the holidays to get you set up for your holiday cards.

And while I can celebrate the magic of a fall photo session as well as the next person, let’s not overlook glorious summertime, which can bring some magic all its own. In case you are in the camp that hadn’t given sweet summertime the time of day, let me walk you through the top five reasons to reconsider having a family photo session in the summer.

#1. Get ahead of the game

Fall is already so busy, with a new school year and extracurricular activity schedules to contend with and then, eventually, the holiday rush. Scheduling your annual photo session in the summertime guarantees you have one big task already off your fall to do list and I highly recommend it. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

#2. Deals and steals

Holiday time is expensive enough and the cost of holiday cards can often come as a surprise in the midst of everything else in the budget. With your photos already taken and delivered by the time the weather starts to turn, you will have months to cash in on early bird sales for holiday cards.

If you think Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are good, try ordering your holiday cards before November. You may never look back. TBH, this is what I do every year and I feel so dang good about paying half price for our cards plus…

#3. Your cards will be on time

Between scheduling the photos, waiting for them to be delivered from your photographer and then starting the daunting task of designing your family’s annual holiday card – a lot of time can pass. Let’s not forget the unpredictability of shipping and mail service these days, either. But having all of this nailed down and completed in the summer months all but guarantees your cards will be on time this year. Maybe, just maybe, they’ll even be the first ones sent of the season…Of course, you still have to get them in the mail on time but that is on you:)

#4. Stand out in the crowd

Booking summertime photos, wherever you might choose to do them (see a few summer session ideas here), ensures your photos won’t look like everyone else’s. Yours might be beachy, your tans will be glowing, your hair a little lighter, the colors a little brighter – these photos are guaranteed to stand out amongst the usual fall foliage or holiday backdrop pics. And how nice to have photos that encourage you to remember those sweet summertime memories made with your family. Win-Win.

#5. Faster turnaround time

Fall is to photographers what Christmastime is to retailers. It is our busiest, craziest, zaniest season. Whether you know it or not, it’s highly likely that if your photographer isn’t shooting, they’re editing and they are under the gun.

Turnaround times are simply longer in the fall, out of pure necessity. In the summer, your photographer isn’t as booked and therefore, you get your images back faster. Everyone wins!
