Have you ever finished a busy week of sessions, looked at the mountain of images waiting to be edited, and thought, “There is absolutely no way I can keep doing all of this myself”?

You love photographing your clients. You might even enjoy editing. But spending every evening at your computer while another gallery gets added to the queue? That gets old really fast.

And yet, handing your editing to someone else can feel terrifying.

What if the images don’t look like yours? Or if the skin tones are off? What if you spend so much time fixing everything that you might as well have edited them yourself?

Friend, I get it.

Outsourcing my editing was one of the first big things I did to create more space in my photography business. Back then, I worked with a human editor. These days, I use an AI photo editing platform, which has made the process faster and more affordable for me.

Hi friend, I’m Sabrina. I’m a lifestyle family and newborn photographer turned business mentor for photographers. After more than 15 years in this industry, I’ve learned that you don’t have to personally touch every task for your work to still be yours.

If you’re feeling buried in your business and aren’t sure what you should simplify or focus on next, start with my Business Blueprint. It’ll help you get clear on what actually matters so you can build a business that supports your life instead of consuming it.

Why Editing Should Be the First Thing You Outsource

When photographers ask me what they should outsource first, editing is almost always at the top of my list. It takes a ton of time, happens over and over again, and once your style is established, much of the process can be repeated.

Think about all those busy season hours spent editing after dinner, staying up too late, or squeezing galleries into your weekends. They add up fast.

There are things in your business only you can do, like photographing sessions, connecting with clients, and making creative decisions. But do you personally need to adjust the exposure and white balance on every image?

Probably not.

Whether you work with a person or use a photo editing platform, outsourcing can give you back hours for the parts of your business and life that actually need you.

Before You Choose a Photo Editing Platform, Define Your Style

Before you hand your images to a human editor or AI photo editing platform, you need to know what your style actually is. And I don’t just mean knowing which preset you use.

Think about:

  • How warm or cool you like your images
  • Your preferred skin tones and contrast
  • How you handle greens
  • How you edit different lighting situations
  • What makes an image feel “finished”

If your editing changes dramatically from gallery to gallery, outsourcing gets harder. Look through your favorite recent work and notice the patterns. That’s your starting point.

And don’t turn this into a giant project. You’re looking for clarity, not perfection. Your style can evolve. You just need to understand it well enough for someone, or something, to recreate it consistently.

Your Three Photo Editing Options

There isn’t one magical solution that’s perfect for every photographer. Your volume, budget, workflow, and personality all matter.

Generally, you’ve got three options.

A Human Editor

This is where I started.

A great human editor can understand nuance, learn your preferences, and make judgment calls when a gallery has tricky lighting. For photographers who want a high touch relationship and like communicating directly with another person, this can be a fantastic option.

The tradeoff is usually cost and turnaround time. Human editors also have busy seasons, vacations, families, and capacity limits just like you do.

An AI Photo Editing Platform

This is what I use now.

I eventually switched to Imagen AI, an AI photo editing platform that can learn your editing style and apply it to your images.

For me, the biggest wins have been speed and cost. I can move through the editing process faster, and it’s more affordable than the human editing workflow I used before. I’ve shared more about my experience in my Imagen AI review if you want all the details.

The important thing to remember is that using AI doesn’t mean asking technology to become the artist. You’re still the artist.

You photographed the session. Made the creative decisions. You developed your style, and decide what the finished gallery should look like. The photo editing platform is helping with a repetitive part of your workflow.

A Hybrid Workflow

You don’t have to choose one extreme or the other.

You could use AI for your initial edits and personally polish each gallery before delivery. You could outsource high volume sessions while editing creative projects yourself. Or maybe you use a human editor most of the year and AI when turnaround time really matters.

Your workflow is allowed to work for you. The system that worked five years ago doesn’t have to be the system you use today.

My Path From Human Editor to AI

Outsourcing editing was one of the first things I handed off because I could see how much time it was consuming. At that point in my business, working with a human editor made sense. It gave me space, and that space mattered.

As technology changed, my workflow changed too. Eventually, switching to an AI photo editing platform made more sense because it was faster and less expensive. That doesn’t mean my old system was wrong. My business simply evolved.

And I want to point out something important here: the goal of outsourcing isn’t necessarily to cram more sessions into your calendar. If outsourcing gives you five hours back every week, you don’t have to immediately fill those hours with more work.

Maybe you use them for marketing or planning. Or maybe you pick your kids up from school, go to lunch with a friend, or close your laptop before dinner.

That counts too.

The Photo Editing Handoff Process

Whether you’re hiring a person or setting up an AI photo editing platform, don’t hand over your entire busy season backlog on day one. Start small.

  • Choose reference galleries. Pick a few that represent your style across different lighting and locations.
  • Know your non-negotiables. Identify what matters most, like skin tones, greens, exposure, or warmth.
  • Test one gallery. Give yourself a chance to learn the process before going all in.
  • Review and refine. Make final adjustments, give feedback, and notice what consistently needs tweaking.

Outsourcing should make your workflow lighter, not give you another complicated system to manage.

How to Keep Your Style Intact Long-Term

Here’s the fear I hear most often: “What if my work stops looking like mine?”

Remember, your style starts long before Lightroom. It’s in the locations, light, composition, client interactions, and moments you choose to capture. Editing matters, but it isn’t all of your style.

Keep a few reference galleries you love, review your finished edits, and give feedback when something feels off. As your style evolves, your system should too.

If you’re using an AI photo editing platform, it’s completely normal for your setup to evolve with you. The goal isn’t to freeze your style forever. It’s to create a workflow that supports you right now.

A Photo Editing Platform Can Give You More Than Faster Edits

There’s no prize for doing everything in your photography business yourself.

If editing is keeping you chained to your computer, outsourcing can create some much needed space. Start by defining your style, then decide whether a human editor, an AI photo editing platform, or a hybrid workflow fits.

For me, that journey started with a human editor and eventually led to Imagen AI. Switching made my workflow faster and more affordable without losing the final look I wanted.

Because this isn’t about doing more. It’s about creating space for your clients, your business, the work only you can do, and yes, a life outside your Lightroom catalog.
