Choosing a newborn photographer in the Dallas/Fort Worth area is hard. There are just so many options. How can anyone be expected to figure out how to find a newborn photographer among all these incredible talents out there?
When you are expecting a baby there are a lot of things to think about. Almost instantly your mind is swirling with ideas for your baby’s name, the nursery, their wardrobe, baby showers, baby moon’s, and of course, their birth.
Finding the perfect newborn photographer definitely makes the cut of things to research and very quickly you likely realize that there are a lot of things to consider. Maybe you get overwhelmed by choices. Maybe you are tempted to just choose the cheapest photographer you can find because #babiesareexpensive.
Let me help you out by giving you a list of things to consider when searching for your newborn photographer in Fort Worth. Here is a list of questions to ask yourself and your potential photographer before committing to anyone.
How much experience with newborns do they have?
Your baby hasn’t even arrived yet and you are concerned for their health and well being. This is exactly why you want to choose a photographer with experience working with newborns. When you are looking for a newborn photographer, make sure to evaluate how much experience with babies they have.
Do you like their aesthetic or vibe?
When researching photographers, there is so much more that goes into it than just “pretty pictures”. BUT, it is super important to like the work that is shown online. As you can probably already tell from your research, different artists create very different work!
When you are looking at a particular photographer’s portfolio of newborn work, do you like what you see? Do you like the way they use light? Do you like the way they pose clients? Do you like the way their editing finishes off their work? These are all important things to consider.
Do you like the way they photograph newborns?
This may seem obvious, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach to newborn photography. Knowing this, it is extremely important to like the way a potential photographer captures newborns.
Some photographers use a studio setting to create extremely posed and perfected images of newborns. Others photograph newborns at home in a very natural and realistic way. And there is literally everything in between. Choose a photographer who provides exactly what you want.
Do you like their personality?
This one might sound a little silly to you but after photographing newborns for more than 10 years, I can tell you that it is VERY important. There is nothing worse than spending a couple of hours working with a photographer who you don’t actually enjoy.
Spend some time following the potential photographers online. Subscribe to their newsletters. Read their blog. Watch their Instagram stories. And then from there, make a judgment call, do you think you will like this person? Like, really like this person?
If your answer is Yes, then great! Shoot them an email and start getting information about hiring them to photograph your new baby. However, if the answer is No, then just move on. Yes, even if you love their work. There are so many photographers in the Fort Worth/Dallas metroplex that you can definitely find one who creates beautiful work AND that you want to spend a morning with.
Do they prioritize safety?
Seems like a no-brainer to consider this when hiring a newborn photographer but you would be shocked at how many people skip this step. It gets skipped because many people assume that if someone is photographing newborns, they must be big on newborn safety. And unfortunately, that isn’t true.
Make sure to ask any potential newborn photographer what their take on baby safety is and how they implement it in their own business. Trust me, even if it seems silly, ask the question.
How important is price?
Okay y’all, this is a big one. I can’t tell you how many people choose a newborn photographer based on price. They send a blanket of inquiry emails out to as many photographers as they can and whoever comes in the cheapest, wins.
I am not saying price has no place in this consideration, because it absolutely does, but stop and think before you choose someone solely based on their pricing… Bringing home a new baby is a super special occasion. Right up there with your wedding. This isn’t just run-of-the-mill, once-a-year family photos. This is documenting your tiny new baby who will only be this little for a hot minute. You won’t get this time back.
If photography is important to you, which I assume it is since you are spending time researching a newborn photographer, then you might consider splurging a bit in this area and balancing your budget somewhere else. I truly believe that the old adage, “you get what you pay for” totally applies here.
Yes, there are some really expensive newborn photographers out there, but those are generally the ones with the most training and experience. And of course, there are some super cheap ones too, but in my experience, those are brand new, just starting out, maybe never photographed a newborn before type. Which one would you rather have handling your baby and capturing this special time for your family?
I am not encouraging you to choose the most expensive newborn photographer, I just want you to consider the pros and cons of the different options at different price points. And THEN choose the one who fits all your other needs. Do not just choose solely based on price because you will likely regret it.
