Reality | Austin Lifestyle Family Photographer

Back in January (yes, that is 5 months ago…better late than never!)…Anyways, I digress, back in January I traveled to Austin to capture the most precious family. Mom had reached out to me a few months prior and asked if I would be willing to come to Austin to photograph them in “their tiny rental”. Mom went on to explain that they were nearing the end of a unique phase in their life. They had been living in a small rental house while they built their dream house. The project has taken longer than expected and while they were in limbo, their family had grown from having a brand new baby when they moved in to leaving with a toddler and another new baby. She said that their time in that home had been cramped and challenging but also sacred and she wanted to have a session there so that they would always remember it.

I absolutely fell in love with this family before I even met them. So many people reach out to me that are interested in shooting a session at home but don’t think their home is magazine worthy enough to be photographed. I always explain that what their house looks like doesn’t matter. Sure, it is the backdrop to the session but it isn’t the focus of the session.

Your life happens at home. All the day-to-day seemingly mundane moments are at home. Packing lunches, tea parties, playdoh, nap time, dress up and baths are at home. Movie nights, morning coffee and bedtime snuggles all happen at home. These are the moments to cherish. These are the moments that are often forgotten but make the biggest impact on our lives. Sure, I love to travel and I am all about hiring an on location photographer to take phenomenal photos while you are on vacation (I do this too btw) but home is where the real magic happens.

Do I recommend a session at home every year? No, not unless you want to. But I do recommend that at least once, you allow someone into your home to capture your reality. No matter how messy, undecorated or drab it is. Love happens at home and what better thing to capture than love?

Interested in an at-home session? I would love to talk to you about what an amazing gift this is to yourself. Shoot me an email and lets chat!
